Cold Seal

Valpac is an important supplier of natural rubber latex-free cold seal adhesives. Our synthetic latex cold seal products have become the standard for medical and other required latex-free packaging applications in the United States and many other parts of the world.Valpac’s natural rubber latex free cohesives have been specifically formulated to be coated onto paper, foil, polyethylene, Tyvek®, PET, and oriented polypropylene films.

Our CH260 Series products offer a wide range of quick stick and peel adhesion properties. They are ideally suited for use in confectionary, bakery and medical applications where human sensitivity to natural latex is an issue.

The exceptional shear stability of the CH260 Series products allows for extended machining on gravure applications as well as other types of coating equipment with far less cleanup required than that of natural latex cohesives.

The Valpac Advantage in Synthetic Cohesives

Valpac’s synthetic cohesives offer numerous advantages over alternative options:

  • They contain no natural rubber latex
  • They have excellent shear stability for good coat-ability
  • Easy clean up compared to natural latex products
  • They are water-based
  • They are available in a wide range of quick stick and peel properties
  • They can be formulated to comply with FDA requirements for indirect food contact

Why Synthetic Latex?

The difference between natural latex and synthetic latex products is in whether they contain natural rubber (cis-1, 4-polyisoprene) or a synthetic polymer emulsion also referred to as latex.

Rubber technologists reserve the term latex for the natural rubber gathered from the rubber tree. In the United States, any medical item that contains natural rubber latex in either the device or the packaging must have a warning that the package contains natural latex. This is done because of the allergic reaction that occurs in some people exposed to natural latex.

In general, hospitals and medical facilities in the US will not allow materials with this hazard warning into their facilities. This required warning for medical devices is not required on non-medical devices such as food packaging. However, some U.S. manufacturers of other items use synthetics in order to avoid any liability caused by the natural latex allergy issues.

The question of natural versus synthetics has been made somewhat more confusing by the term “semi-synthetic latex,” which is a blend of natural rubber and synthetic polymers. While some suppliers of these “semi-synthetic” products do not make it clear to the user that natural latex is still present in the formulation, at Valpac we make a clear differentiation between our products of this type and will supply a natural latex free statement when requested.
